Overview

This intermediate-level course dives into the art of sampling and remixing, blending a deep appreciation for its cultural roots with hands-on production techniques. You'll learn how to source, warp, and manipulate audio in Ableton Live, using samples from both classic tracks and your own library. Along the way, you’ll explore the history of sampling, from its origins in hip-hop to its influence on modern electronic and popular music.

Course Topics

History of Sampling: Explore the evolution of sampling from its roots in hip-hop and electronic music to its modern-day applications in popular music and underground dance music.

Sampling and Sourcing: Learn to dig for samples anywhere and everywhere, from vinyl records and classic tracks to working with our partner Splice, and sourcing found sounds.

Warping and Audio Manipulation: Gain a deep understanding of Ableton’s Warp modes and learn how to manipulate audio, whether it’s changing tempo, altering pitch, or creatively chopping up samples.

Edits, Bootlegs, and Remixes: Learn how to reimagine existing songs, remix stems, and work with acapellas to create new and unique versions of your favorite tracks. Whether it’s a house re-edit or a completely new take, you’ll learn how to create professional-quality remixes.

Music Theory: Learn how to write better chord progressions, bass lines, and melodies. By the end of the course, you'll be able to reharmonize toplines and acapellas and craft compelling layers to accompany any sample or remix stem.
